How do I find out why I snore?

A sleep study. This is a medical test either performed in a lab or at your home that monitors your breathing and cardiac activity while you sleep. A sleep medicine doctor will look at these readings and determine, definitively, if you have sleep apnea, a common condition found in those that snore. This sleep-breathing disorder is defined as the cessation of breathing during sleep for at least 10 seconds at a time, five times an hour. Sleep apnea and its side effects can have a serious impact on overall health. The sleep study will be read by a sleep medicine doctor and either a CPAP, surgery or an oral appliance will be recommended and prescribed. We can assist in the third option.

What about a CPAP, I have one and don’t use it?

A CPAP machine has been used for years to treat patients with sleep apnea. Sleep apnea results when a patient’s airway is blocked by the tissues of their mouth or throat, preventing oxygen flow to the body. The CPAP tries to prevent this by delivering a steady stream of pressurized oxygen through a facial mask. Unfortunately, many people hate their CPAP. This is why nearly 50% of people prescribed a CPAP machine stop using it after the first year.

Common complaints included 1. The mask and noisy machine often prevent patients from falling asleep. 2. The mask can be uncomfortable and constricted, leading many to even experience claustrophobia. 3. The machine can be quite loud, and this not only disturbs the patient, but anyone else that might be sharing the room with them. 4. The machine is quite bulky, can restrict a person’s movement and is difficult to travel with. Fortunately, there is a viable CPAP alternative for some patients which is an oral appliance.
